ABOUT SEPARK MUSIC   LEADERS IN MUSIC EDUCATION

The Founders

Phillip and Bee Separk, after a brief partnership with the Brodt family in Charlotte NC, established their business in Winston-Salem in the late 1940′s. They moved the business to 636 West 4th Street in 1954 and remained there through the decline of small-town America, resisting the lure of the large mall on the fringe of the city.

Phillip, a clarinetist who encouraged the creation of the Winston-Salem Symphony, expanded his market throughout the southeast in his fully stocked van. When he passed away in the 1980′s, Bee’s determination kept the business alive to serve her local customers.

The New Owners

When his company’s merger became hostile Drew Parker and his wife Marlene looked south for a new opportunity to grow a business of their own. They found Bee Separk through a friend at Carl Fischer in New York and arrived in Winston-Salem in the winter of 1995, full of energy and ideas. That energy and their network of industry contacts helped them put their little company on a solid financial footing in the next few years.

The New Vision

As a former band director, Drew’s vision had always focused on serving that familiar band of brothers that taught beginners and made musicians of them. It took more time than expected, but by 2008, the 4th Street store’s difficult location and lack of parking were proving to be an insurmountable hurdle. After a careful market analysis and a 2-year search for a new location, Separk Music reopened in Lewisville, NC, on the home doorstep of the majority of its customer base.

The Goal

Drew will tell you he is still a band director with a new role – bringing the power of the industry to support the band directors who trust and rely on him. He has built a staff of music professionals, some former band directors, to make this a reality.

Initiatives like the annual “Building Better Bands” workshop, program support at the North Carolina Music Educator’s convention, sponsorship of district and state clinics and workshops, regular recruiting trips to colleges and universities, and an ongoing interest in music education is testament to where Separk Music is going. As “Leaders in Music Education”, we have set a new standard in North Carolina.
